Automate return reason classification for your Shopify store
ReturnSense classifies every return with AI—eliminating manual tagging, reducing analyst time, and surfacing product insight at scale.
How ReturnSense works
Each return is classified in real time as it arrives in Shopify—no manual review required. Classes map to your own taxonomy and export to your analytics stack.
Core classification
AI return reason tag
GPT-4o classifies each return from customer input, order history, and product data. Tags are mapped to your defined taxonomy and stored as Shopify metafields.
Autonomous operation
Once connected, ReturnSense runs without ongoing analyst intervention. New returns are processed on ingestion—no batch queues or manual triggers.
Nestable category mapping
Map ReturnSense output labels to your internal category schema. You control the label set; the model assigns them per return.
Analytics and reporting
Return reason dashboard
Visualize return volume by reason across date ranges. See trends by SKU, collection, or time period to identify product and fulfillment issues.
Structured data export
Export classified return data as CSV or via webhook to BI tools and WMS systems. Each row includes return ID, reason, confidence, and product attributes.
Alert thresholds
Set alerts for when a specific reason exceeds a configurable return rate threshold, surfacing emerging product quality issues automatically.
Integrations and access
Shopify app
Installs as a standard Shopify app. OAuth connection via the Shopify admin. No custom webhooks or middleware required on the merchant side.
SCIM provisioning
Supports SAML and SCIM for team member account management—simplifies provisioning and deprovisioning as the merchant team scales.
Merchant outcomes
Early-adopter merchants using ReturnSense reported measurable reductions in manual classification effort and faster resolution of return reason trends.

Common questions
How does ReturnSense determine the return reason?
ReturnSense uses a fine-tuned classification model to analyze the customer-return message, order metadata, and product attributes available at return initiation. Each classification is stored with a confidence score and the input signals used—so you can audit the assignment without opaque output.
How long does it take to set up?
Installation takes under 5 minutes via the Shopify app store. Initial taxonomy mapping—defining which labels your store uses—typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on the number of categories. After that, classification runs automatically without further setup.
What happens to my return data? Is it used to train the model?
Return data is processed to produce classifications. ReturnSense does not use your merchant return data to train the shared classification model. Your data remains isolated to your store and your account. A data processing agreement is available on request.
What if the AI misclassifies a return reason?
Each classification includes a confidence score and can be manually overridden directly in the Shopify admin. Override events are fed back into the system to improve future accuracy for your specific product catalog. High-confidence overrides are reviewed by the ReturnSense team quarterly.
Does ReturnSense work if I use a 3PL or fulfillment partner?
Yes. ReturnSense connects to returns initiated in Shopify regardless of fulfillment method. If your 3PL adds its own reason codes, those codes can be mapped to your ReturnSense taxonomy during setup.
Can I export classified return data to my BI tool or spreadsheet?
Yes. Classified returns are available as CSV download on demand, and via webhook for real-time push to your analytics stack. Export fields include return ID, SKU, AI-assigned reason, confidence, and date.
