Why classification matters for return costs

Most returns platforms track volume. ReturnSense tracks why—and surfaces the patterns that drive your refund payouts.

Classification engine

LLM-based tagging

ReturnSense uses a fine-tuned language model to parse customer messages and automatically tag return reasons. No rule-building required.

Multi-language

Classifies return reasons across English, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese storefronts without separate integrations.

Confidence scores

Each classification includes a confidence score. Low-confidence results flag for manual review, so you decide when human judgment is needed.

Training data ownership

Your return data is not used to improve shared models. Classification runs on isolated infrastructure per merchant account.

Operational outcomes

Reason-based reporting

Group refunds by root cause: sizing issues, product defects, late delivery, wrong item. Identify which categories drive highest payout costs.

Shopify-native UX

Installs as a standard Shopify app. No API credentials or developer time required for initial setup.

Predictable billing

Flat monthly fee covers unlimited classifications. No billing surprises during peak return periods like January or post-holiday.

Common questions

How does ReturnSense classify return reasons?

ReturnSense processes the text customers submit when initiating a return—such as notes or messages—using a language model fine-tuned on e-commerce return patterns. The model assigns a reason category (e.g., defective, wrong size, changed mind) along with a confidence score. Low-confidence classifications are flagged for manual review in your dashboard. The classification happens in real time as returns arrive, with results available within seconds of submission.

The model runs on per-tenant infrastructure. Your return data is not used to train shared models, and raw text is not retained beyond 30 days after classification.

What Shopify plans does ReturnSense support?

ReturnSense supports all Shopify plans including Basic Shopify, Shopify, Advanced Shopify, and Shopify Plus. The setup method differs by plan tier: Basic and standard Shopify plans connect via the Storefront API or Admin API using credentials you generate in your Shopify admin. Shopify Plus accounts can use webhook-based ingestion for faster setup.

A Shopify Basic plan or higher is required. ReturnSense does not support Shopify Lite or storefront-only accounts because it requires access to the returns management API.

How does pricing compare to per-return competitors?

ReturnSense charges a flat $49/month regardless of how many returns you process. Competitors like Loop, Happy Returns, and Returnly use usage-based pricing where cost scales with return volume.

For a merchant processing 500 returns per month, competitors typically charge $0.50–$1.50 per return, yielding $250–$750/month. ReturnSense at $49/month covers unlimited classifications at that volume. For merchants processing 2,000+ returns monthly, the cost advantage narrows but remains favorable until approximately 3,000–4,000 returns depending on the competitor's rate card.

Pricing is published on our website. No sales call required to get the $49/month rate.

What happens to my return data?

Return text submitted for classification is processed and then purged from active storage after 30 days. Classification results—reason tags and confidence scores—are retained for 12 months under your account.

ReturnSense does not sell your data, share it with third parties, or use it to train shared models. You can export all stored data at any time from your dashboard, and you can request deletion of all stored data including classification results at any point.

The service is GDPR and CCPA compliant. A data processing agreement is available for merchants requiring one for their compliance program.

Do I need developer resources to integrate ReturnSense?

No developer resources are required for the standard Shopify app integration. The app installs directly from the Shopify App Store and connects to your store using OAuth—the same permission flow used by all Shopify apps.

After installation, you configure which return reasons to track and optionally adjust confidence thresholds in the settings dashboard. The full setup typically takes under 30 minutes.

API-based integration is available for custom storefronts or headless implementations, but this is optional. API documentation is publicly accessible before you sign up.
